We may have learned a few lessons or two from Mad Men, and now you can get even more beauty inspiration from the show. That’s because Mad Men-inspired nail polish is coming our way. With all the martinis being slung around at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, it makes perfect sense that the polish brand chosen for this venture would be a cocktail-inspired line, Nailtini.

Janie Bryant, the costume designer for the series, said she was inspired by fabrics of the ’60s, like satin, velvet, and lamé, when creating the limited-edition polish shades ($14). Check out the lacquers — Bourbon Satin (a brown), French 75 (a gold), Deauville (a platinum), and Stinger (an iridescent) — at Duane Reade’s Look and CVS’s Beauty 360 in a few months.

KRISSY:

I feel like my prayers have been answered!  My only complaint about Beauty 360 was the lack of nail polish…well that’s about to change with this new collection.

This is actually my second review of these products.  I figured I’d try it every possible way I can think of and do a followup review.  If you have any questions please let me know.

Say what you please about the song but I LOVE it!  We’re going to see the Wicked Musical in a month or so and I can’t wait.  I’m starting the book this week.  I’ve had this planned for years and kept putting it off.

Fresh off the success of her inaugural fragrance Heat, launched in February to great fanfare, Beyonce Knowles is set to debut another spicy scent this September in the form of Beyonce Heat Ultimate Elixir.

This time around the 28-year-old Texas native puts a spin on the original fragrance by using notes that are meant to capture a more private side to the multi-hyphenate entertainer. Ultimate Elixir mixes spicy-floral Red Vanilla Orchid and Osmanthus petals with the sensuous notes of Cedarwood and Amber, then adds in delicious Vanilla and Tonka bean to drive the point home that this is a bouquet meant for one sexy siren.

In Beyonce terms, think more intimate, like B.B. Homemaker, than outrageous, like Sasha Fierce.

When making the decision to enter the world of fragrance, Beyonce says it was her mother, Tina Knowles, who provided much of the inspiration.

“My first memory of fragrance is my mother,” she says.

“And as a very young girl, hearing her footsteps…her stilettos click, click, clicking on the hardwood floor and she wore a beautiful fragrance and she would walk past me and it would just stay in the room. It left a warm feeling every time I thought about her scent.

“I think about the icons that I respect and they all have their own fragrance so I thought it was time for me to have my own.”

Beyonce has been making her mark on the beauty world of late, spotted most recently in a sexy advertisement for L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour Compact in Beyonce’s Red. We’ve also been admiring her hair, which she’s been wearing in a summer-perfect style of soft, tousled curls.

Perfect for the heat.

Beyonce Heat Ultimate Elixir ($59, 1.7 oz/50ml) will be available this September at fine department stores across the country.

KRISSY:

I’m really anticipating the released of this new fragrance.  I know you ladies don’t care for fragrance reviews but one every now and then doesn’t hurt, right?  I like Heat just the way it is so I can’t wait to find out if this one is sweeter or spicier.  I really don’t think I can take it being spicier.  The bottle almost looks like Heat.  this should be interesting.  We shall wait and see.

CREME - A creme is one of the most popular finishes we know. This is just a plain color without any glitter, shimmer, etc added to it. The finish is glossy and smooth.

JELLY - A jelly is just like a creme, but the main difference is the substance: more jelly-like. They tend to be sheer but they make up for it by being xtremely glossy.

SHIMMER - The shimmer finish is a colored base with shimmer added to it, most of the times that color is silver but we’re seeing contrasting colors more often.

GLASS FLECKED – Glass flecked polishes look like they contain small glass particles, often mixed in a jelly base. The finish is very smooth, yet sparkly.

NEON - You could say neon describes color, not finish. But most neons do have a particular finish, very bright colors that often dry semi-matte.

FROST - A frost is a very fine shimmery polish with obvious bruststrokes. These kind of finishes are losing popularity and mostly seen in older polishes.

PEARL - The pearl finish is quite similar to the frost finish, but it has a more pearly sheen to it.

FOIL - Foil polishes often have a metallic base color with very fine glitter added to it. The finish is very smooth yet sparkly.

METALLIC - Metallic finishes make your nails appear like metal. Metallic polishes are especially popular in copper, gold or silver.

GLITTER - Glitter is one of most flashiest finishes. These glitters are often put in a jelly base. The amount of glitter can vary a lot. Sometimes you’ll need top coat to smoothen the surface.

STRING GLITTER – Mostly glitter in a clear base so they’re often used as a top coat. String glitter consists out of glitters in rectangular shapes, often in silver or iridiscent colors.

ROUND GLITTER – Just as string glitter, these are mostly used as a top coat. The glitters in this clear base are round shaped.

SQUARE GLITTER – Another glitter top coat, but with glitter in the shape of squares.

HEX GLITTER – A very popular glitter shape: hex or hexagonal. These are very popular and more common these days. Often used in regular glitter polish as well.

SHAPE GLITTER – This is a very special glitter top coat, in this picture you see stars, but there are also glitter top coats containing hearts and diamonds (rhombus).

MATTE - This finish dries completely matte, no shine whatsoever. These dry quickly and sometimes end up being streaky. Handlotion is to be avoided because it decreases the matte effect.

SATIN - Satin finishes end up matte as well, but not entirely matte. There is still a slight shine, but not enough to classify it as glossy.

SUEDE - Just like mattes, suedes are completely matte. Suedes contain shimmer though, so that’s what sets them apart from regular mattes.

HOLO - Holographic polishes contain rainbow colored glitter, which changes color on the reflection of light. This finish is very obvious in sun light.

HOLO GLITTER – Holographic glitter in a different color base. The glitter is often more sparse and while it does change color upon different light, there is no rainbow effect to be seen.

FLAKIES - Flakie polishes consist out of a jelly base with ver
y fine opal (often duochrome) particles in it. They’re mostly used for layering as the jelly base is often sheer.

DUO CHROME – Duochrome polishes change color on the reflection of light. True duochromes are very obvious and often show 2 colors, but sometimes even more.

IRIDISCENT - This finish is often confused with duochrome or shimmer. An iridiscent finish is a color that flashes a different color. These are not obvious enough to be a duochrome.

SHEER - This is a half transparent finish, often used in French manicures to show off the white tips. Most sheers are salmon, nude or pink.

WATER - This is a strange and not that well known finish. A water finish resembles the characteristics of a jelly, but is less opaque.

If you thought there wasn’t any more room for another major cosmetics retailer in the industry you were wrong.  Of course we have Ulta, Sephora, countless drugstores and department stores, beauty supply stores, cosmetics outlets, as well as online retailers like Beauty.com.  How would another cosmetics retailer fit in an already over populated industry?  Allow me to introduce you to a new store owned by CVS/pharmacy, Beauty 360.  Beauty 360 is the new prestige cosmetics retailer directly connected to select CVS/pharmacy stores.  This concept isn’t unique but properly executed it could be something great.  Ulta is a good example of cosmetics retailers that carries both prestigious brands such as Smashbox, Urban Decay, and Dermalogica as well as drugstore brands such as Maybelline, L’Oreal, and Cover Girl.  Ulta is one of my go-to retailers for everything cosmetic retailer.  I can find everything from newly released polish collections, hair products and tolls, and even use Ulta coupons.

Since I moved to the Bay Area I’m finding it entirely too difficult to visit an Ulta location because it’s a 50 mile drive.  I simply don’t have the time or desire.  I’m lucky enough to be relatively close to a few Beauty 360 locations in both Los Angeles (when I’m visiting) and home in the Bay Area.  I was invited by the store manager of the Beauty 360 location in Palos Verdes (Rolling Hills Estates) and asked to pay a visit.  Because of my hectic schedule I was never able to give her an exact date when I would be able to make it.

I was in the area and dropped in.  I was immediately impressed with the open welcoming layout of Beauty 360.  It was overwhelming at all.  I also liked that the brands along the wall had instructional videos playing and how friendly the staff was.  The selection of prestige brands is the perfect blend of well-known, hard to find, and brands all beauty enthusiast need to know about.  Paul Dorf, POP Beauty, Cargo, Laura Geller, Burberry, 100% Pure, Mario Badescu, and Philip B are just a few of the brands you can find at Beauty 360.  They also hold in-store beauty events and facials.  These are real facials too ladies, not your mom & pop mini facials.  One thing I noticed that they need some serious help in the nail color department.  I only found one brand that wasn’t my taste, but they had some nail treatments from brands that have been around for years that I’ve heard great reviews of.  I’m visiting a location in the Bay Area for my Laura Geller “Golden Apricot” this week.  I hope it’s just as immaculately clean as the Palos Verdes store.  That location was perfect!

Blissful Lengths Kukuinut Oil Elixir

The multitasking miracle product is loaded with natural oils, and growth enhancing extracts guaranteed to leave your tresses, and scalp euphoric!

Passion Fruit Curl Control Paste

Smooth out and slick down unruly edged, tame frizzy, out of control curls, and add amazing sheen all in one step

No other details such as date and price point were noted but it looks like things have been going fast as Target brings in new products for curly hair types.  I would be surprised if they showed up at Target locations this summer and under $10 each like their other products.  This is a good look for Curls.  I’ve been happy with a couple of the products I’ve tried by them.  I’m not sure if Blissful Lengths Kukuinut Oil Elixir is the same as Curls Champagne & Caviar Curl Elixir, which is described as a hair oil blend for sheen and hair growth.
