North Hollywood nail polish maker OPI Products Inc., best known for its nail lacquers inspired by celebrities including Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Jennifer Lopez, has been purchased by cosmetics giant Coty Inc., the companies announced Monday.

This latest acquisition by privately held Coty, which last year sold $4 billion worth of fragrances and other beauty products, comes amid a flurry of growth by the brand. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

“It’s time for a new era at OPI,” said George Schaeffer, the company’s co-founder and chief executive. “Our management team will continue on with the company, and OPI’s business strategy will remain focused on the salon professional.” The company employs about 450 workers at its main location in North Hollywood.

This was Coty’s third acquisition of a cosmetics company in three weeks. “We view the acquisition of OPI as complementary to Coty and a natural extension of our strategy to offer both a unique portfolio of brands,” Coty CEO Bernd Beetz said in a statement.

The merger will also enable Coty to tap into OPI’s chip-resistant-nail lacquer products, the company’s most successful product line, he said.

“This acquisition will allow Coty to expand our presence in the nail care category,” said Beetz, adding that purchasing the OPI brand gives the company a new avenue of distribution in professional salons. OPI also has a number of successful partnerships with the CW network, Dell Inc., Walt Disney Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.

Last week, New York-based Coty said it would buy skin-care and cosmetics company Philosophy from private equity firm Carlyle Group. The week before that, Coty said it would purchase Dr. Scheller Cosmetics from Russian cosmetics company Kalina Group. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“Coty has really been one of the most aggressive acquirers in the cosmetics industry this year,” said Rommel T. Dionisio, senior vice president at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles. He noted that larger companies have been buying smaller salon brands of cosmetics this year.

In January, Shiseido Co., Japan’s largest cosmetics company, grabbed a bigger piece of the U.S. market by purchasing San Francisco firm Bare Escentuals Beauty Inc. for $1.7 billion, the largest acquisition in the company’s 83-year history . In May, cosmetics giant Estee Lauder Inc. bought Culver City makeup company Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics Inc. in the hope of attracting younger customers.

From a growth standpoint, OPI stands to gain a broader distribution platform, Dionisio said.

“OPI certainly gains a deep-pocketed parent company,” he said. “From a global perspective, that’s one of the appeals of merging with larger companies. They have faster potential to expand in overseas markets.”

My boo esthetician Nat D. is an OPI snob…she’s slowly trying to wear other brands but still remains true to OPI (as you can see from the photo above).  I’ve been hearing rumors about the Coty OPI acquisition for a while now, and it was just confirmed yesterday.  Some are for it and others are unhappy because Coty allegedly does animal testing.  That doesn’t mean OPI will be tested on animals, but bloggers have vowed to no longer featuring OPI Products and customers have said they will no longer be purchasing the products as well.  I personally don’t have any issues with the acquisition and I want to see what’s going to come of everything first.  I’m not ready to swear off OPI Products because of this because I’d have to swear my entire life away.  What do I do with all my Vera Wang perfume?  Am I suppose to tell the Man “sorry no more Kenneth Cole for you buddy”?  Do I snatch away my uncle’s bottle of JOOP!?  What about my Baby Phat outfits?  Well I’m joking about that last one but you get the picture.

So what are your thoughts about the acquisition?

The Man was kind enough…and I do mean kind enough to help me take down my weave.  Don’t get it confused…my man is no hair stylist but the job had to be done.  My hair was up for 2 ½ months and it was time.  My hair grew 1 ½ inches and I was missing my natural hair.  I’ll also miss the convenience of waking up with “glam hair” and just walking out the door.  With me going back to work full time this week this may not have been the best time to change my hair.  The good news is that I have some new natural hair products to play with!  Avlon (the makers of KeraCare) has introduced a brand new collection of natural hair care products called Natural Textures and it’s been getting a lot of buzz in the natural hair community.  I wanted to post my first impression and thoughts about the line just as a preview until I post the full review this week.

As of right now these products are only available online through Avlon.com

  • I love the packaging but despise shampoo in a jar.  I wash my hair in the shower and this is asking for trouble.  But overall the packaging for everything else is great.  The directions and description on the jars and bottles are some of the best I’ve seen in a long time- very accurate tips on curl definition, styling, and techniques.
  • The ingredients of these products really make them stand out.  I can’t think of any other natural hair company that’s combing great oils and botanicals for natural hair, styling and curl definition, and scalp care.

  • The 3-step system should be easy to follow but it’s confusing.  The easiest step to understand is step 1- the Cleansing Cream.  Your best bet is to understand your hair care needs and what formulas you prefer, other than relying on the numbering system.
  • Step 2 is where the confusion starts.  You have the option to use the Leave-In Conditioner or Hair Milk…I haven’t used them yet but they may somewhat overlap each other.  You can use the Leave-In Conditioner with most (if not all) of the styling aids.

  • Step 3 gives you 3 styling aid options but only 2 are true styling aids…the Twist & Define Cream and Defining Custard which has a true custard consistency.  I can’t wait to see if these work better alone or together (like you would with many brands such as Kinky-Curly and Curls).
  • The Butter Cream is a soufflé moisturizer which will probably work best as a daily moisturizer and scalp dressing….maybe even to seal moisture.  I used the Butter Cream on Baby Pull-Up’s hair this morning and loved it.

My recommendation – This skin care collection is great for someone looking for an easy skin care regimen that will help with skin cell turnover, exfoliate, moisturize, and hydrate your skin…basically the grown & sexy crowd—25 & up!  Skin cells begin to regenerate slower once you reach your mid 20s so it’s best to start a mild anti-aging skin care regimen.  I tend to shy away from natural products because I find it to be overwhelming at time.  The face that H2O Plus’ line is mostly to all natural was just an added bonus for me.  Yes—it’s great because I have eczema and it’s unbelievably gentle.  Like a dork I tasted it and couldn’t it wasn’t bad.  Now I wouldn’t recommend taste testing your skin care products but I was curious lol.  If you’re looking to simplify your skin care routine and have a great balance (not oily or dry) and well hydrated, this is the line for you.  Admittedly, I’m not a fan of the graphics on the packaging.  It just seems a little drab and created by a novice like myself.  If I seen it on a store shelf I’d pass it before even reading about it…which is sad because they’ve replaced a lot of my beloved Dermalogica products.

NARS Midnight Express, NYC Plaza Plumberry, NYC Starry Silver Glitter, Revlon Top Speed Royal, Revlon Top Speed Cloud, Revlon Top Speed Jelly

NARS “Midnight Express” finally arrived last week and I got a chance to wear it but was so busy I forgot to take pictures.  I got so many compliments on the color.  I promise I’ll get pictures up this week.  I bought NYC “Plaza Plumberry” because it’s a great balance of both maroon and burgundy.  I intended on looking for a nice burgundy…clearly I got a little sidetracked.  NYC “Starry Silver Glitter” is a winter must-have.  I saw it on Landa’s blog “Bright Lights, Big Color”.

What is up with these new Revlon Top Speed colors?! I haven’t seen any information about these in any magazines or blogs. They were freshly stocked on Black Friday and the light illuminated them like they were sent from heaven. I even let my shopping cart drift. They released about 10 new colors and I bought “Royal”, “Cloud” and “Jelly”. I actually bought 2 bottles of “Royal” but my mom’s friend came to the house and bought it. I don’t know if these colors are limited edition but they’re gorgeous. “Royal” is a must-have color. A jelly-like bright vivid royal blue…I’m in love. I couldn’t find any information on these new colors on Revlon’s website so I’m not sure where they came from or how long they’ll be around. I don’t see a “limited edition” label so they may be around for a while.

UPDATE: G. over at Nouveau Cheap spotted these at CVS back in October and the collection is bigger than I thought—24 colors! One of her lovely readers sent over a picture of all the new Revlon Top Speed colors. I haven’t seen Revlon Top Speed in years! I still have some in my stash. I’m heading over to CVS this week to get more!

My oldest stepson has curly hair yet never wears it curly. He just walks out the house with his hair kind of fluffed out. I’ve been patiently waiting for him to say “hey help me out with this” but that moment never came. Yesterday I took things in my own hands and asked him did he want me to give him “curls for the girls” and he said sure. I grabbed my water bottle and sprayed his hair with water and applied Kinky-Curly “Knot Today” while styling his hair with my hands. Since I knew he didn’t shampoo his hair with Kinky-Curly “Come Clean” and I know how temperamental Kinky-Curly “Curling Custard” can be if you use a shampoo or conditioner that has certain ingredients in it, I used Curls “Goddess Curl” Gel for hold. You couldn’t tell him nothin’! He was feeling himself and was complimented left and right. I’m thinking about getting him the Curls line-up so he can do his hair every day. I would love to get him the Kinky-Curly set but you can go days without redoing your hair with it and knowing him, he’ll be doing his hair every day.

Side note:  I promise he’s was not ashy when I took this pic.  Blame me for having the macro setting on lol.

Happy Turkey Day!!  I had a super long day and wasn’t even sure I’d be able to get anything posted today.  Thankfully Christine at Temptalia posted a lot of wonderful beauty deals and I added a few as well.  Today the Man and I hosted our first Thanksgiving dinner and surprisingly everything turned out great.  But they wasn’t ready for my homemade cranberry sauce.  Haters!  It wasn’t even tart…but nooo they didn’t want it.  I was able to get in all my Black Friday shopping for the boys and I’m taking the family out to venture the city tomorrow before they head back to Los Angeles.  I hope you all enjoyed your day as much as I did.  Happy Holidays and enjoy the saving!

C.O. Bigelow is releasing 4 new limited edition holiday glosses, which are available at Bath & Body Works; Spiced Latte, Warm Apple Cider, Holiday Shortbread, and Butterscotch Pudding.  It’s no debate that C.O. Bigelow is a beauty cult favorite and has created the most perfect mint lip gloss I’ve ever used, but the new Mentha Lip Shines aren’t for everyone.  The formulas are consisted with their previous glosses and aren’t too thick nor too thin, they’re moisturizing and somewhat long-lasting for a lip gloss.  They also didn’t stray from the cooling mint flavor in the new glosses- which in my opinion they may have wanted to leave that out in the “Spiced Latte” flavor.  Some things just don’t mix and cinnamon, coffee, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, and mint is one of them.  Maybe a mint latte or a spiced latte without the mint would have been great.

“Holiday Shortbread” Mentha Lip Shine is more my speed.  The consistency is the same but I love the vanilla mint.  It doesn’t smell like a buttery cookie to me…which may be a good thing in this case.  All of the new Holiday Mentha Lip Shines have silver shimmer which looks great or worn alone.  I’m actually curious about the Warm Apple Cider flavor…I’m going to hold off on the “Butterscotch Pudding”.  Something about that combination just does not sound appeasing.

Last two swatches are of both Mentha Lip Shine Holiday Glosses
