Summer is a great time of year for reinvigorating your look, whether that’s going out and buying a few new additions to your wardrobe or changing your style altogether. Experimenting with new hairstyles is one of the best ways to bring a new edge to your look without spending too much cash. You don’t need to go to top salon to alter your style, with salon-quality styling equipment available for your own use. This not only saves you money but also gives you the freedom to experiment with as many different looks as you want in the comfort of your own home. If it goes terribly wrong, no worries! Wash it out and try again. If it works perfectly, great! You can do it again whenever you want.
However, if you are experimenting with new styles at home, you need to be sure to use top quality heat styling tools. Otherwise you risk causing serious damage to your hair, with cheap styling equipment often failing to meet adequate safety standards. Straighteners and stylers from ghd already have a great reputation in salons and with celebrities, and although they are an expensive investment, they have consistently been regarded as the best tools on the market.
One ghd styler can replace multiple different cheaper alternatives; with a pair of ghd hair straighteners you can straighten, curl, wave and flick your hair in hundreds of different ways, all with the same tool. This is due to their careful design and optimum temperature, giving whatever style you create great hold and longevity whilst reducing heat damage.
For some great ideas to inspire your summer style, you can view the ghd website and explore their hairstyles guide, gallery, and instructive styling videos. These will help you create your perfect ghd style quickly and easily, in your own bedroom!

Oh hey new Hot Tools newcomer, welcome to my collection.

Curling/ wave wands aren’t new to me, but this new 2 barrel curler really caught my eye because of the design.  I wish this one was on the market a few years ago because I wouldn’t have had the need for a few curlers I already own.  This barrel does the job of 3 different tools; it can create a loose wave, small curls, and deep waves.  I prefer to use it for deep waves and clamps just don’t appeal to me.  I’m not a fan of the wide, semi finger-wave look, but a deep (my hair has been in braids all day look) wave is perfect for me.  It just looks more natural to me.

Wave the hair throughout the 2 wands (over and under like an infinity symbol and you’ll immediately notice how it mimics a braid.  Slide the wand out and spray hair with a short burst of flexible holding spray (I used Rusk Being Flexible Holding Spray).  Allow the curl to fall natural once cooled.  Don’t fuss with it; just let it do what it’s going to do.  This will also help the curls last longer.  Try to start as close to the base as you can, but if you find this difficult just turn the entire wand.  I tried using it without the accompanying protection glove but that wasn’t going to work.  It wasn’t an issue with burned fingers but you can move quickly with the glove, so why waste time.

It took me less about 20 minutes to do my entire head, which is great considering I’m wearing 24” hair.  I didn’t run the hair all the way through because I like the “I didn’t do my hair” look.  But to make it cleaner and more uniform, run the hair all the way through to the ends.  If you love a versatile hair tool, you have to add get this barrel.  I bought this one at Ulta using my 20% off coupon and save $10.00.  Since these are so new you may not be able to find them at all Ulta locations.  My location had it but it wasn’t on the floor yet, so she had to hunt for it in the back.

For deep waves (as pictured), run the hair over and under like and infinity symbol or figure 8

For small curls, wrap the hair around a single barrel

For lose waves, wrap the in circles around both barrels

Oh yes baby…I finally got my Bella Dream Hair 24″ Brazilian Natural Wave installed by the fab Crystal, celebrity stylist and owner of Studio 6 Salon.  It took her a total of 2 1/2 hours including flat iron and razor cut (that post will be up later).  As always Bella’s hair is perfect; healthy texture and ends, super clean, and even.  Above is the natural wave pattern and Crystal even commented on how nice and strong the wefts are (my review will be posted soon).  Days later, I’ve only noticed 3 strands shed…how effin’ awesome is that?

I. Don’t. Know. Where. To. Even. Start. With. This.

Let’s get the obvious out the way.  Solange needs to drop this version of “Cosmic Journey” on iTunes right now so I can buy it!  That’s for sure.

What I don’t truly care for this Carol’s Daughter openly promoting natural hair and transitioning as a movement, by launching TransitioningMovement.com .  It just gives me the feeling that naturally curly hair is just being commercialized.  But from a business stand point I can understand why they’re starting a site dedicated to natural hair.  After all, Lise Price (founder  of Carol’s Daughter), naturals are a sought after market and she is a natural.  And they’re naturals online that spend every being in their body’s focus on natural hair.  For me personally, it’s just hair.  But what is the goal of this movement?  Educating people on how to transition (i.e. grow your hair….I get a straight face every time I explain this to someone that’s not AA and get the “so you mean grow your hair”)?  Do they want people to dump their relaxers, flat irons, and weaves?  Is there a goal of the movement? Or is this just a showcasing of naturals? Is transitioning a cosmetic journey? I have so many questions.

Post your thoughts….help me understand what I’m missing?

I’ve been using Beyond The Zone Protein Cocktail Spray for years…I’ve bought at least 10 bottles of the stuff.  The only thing I use it for it is to add moisture in my hair before applying Eco Styler with Olive Oil so I can control frizz when wearing a ponytail.  But I also don’t want the center of my hair to be dry or brittle.  I’ll admit, I’m known to keep wear the same ponytail up for days at a time, only fixing the edges.  I don’t experiment with many sprays like this because they usually contain too many moisturizers and/ or glycerin and cause frizz since it doesn’t allow the gel to hold.

Mane n Tail has been a trusted brand for years, and from my braid-wearing days I know that braid sprays tend to be lighter so it kind of seemed like the Mane n Tail Braid Sheen Spray is a match made in heaven.  Sure enough it was.  I typically apply it in the center of my hair where I’m placing my ponytail and on the loose hair that’ll be tucked in a bun.  My hair has been so soft and manageable.  It also gave my hair some sheen without looking oily, so I’m satisfied.  I left my hair up for a week and didn’t get an itchy scalp at all.

The ingredients aren’t much to brag about, it has some growth aids and it also has colt’s foot which some like for growth but some stay away from.  So be sure to check the ingredients for any allergies. I personally like it and for less than $5 for 12 ounces it’s a better bargain than my Protein Cocktail.

Where to buy:  Most beauty supply stores.  I bought this one at House of Elegance Beauty Supply in Carson.

The cost:  $2.99-$495

How young is too young for a hair weave?

Now this is a tough one.  I didn’t start wearing weaves until I was an adult.  I just didn’t have a desire to wear a weave and back in those days it was assumed that if you wore a weave, you were bald or had some serious issues going on with your hair.  Times are different now and I get a lot of questions from young girls looking to get weaves.  A couple things to consider if you are not of age to purchase your own weave (aka of adult age); what are your reasons for wanting a weave and how well do you understand your natural hair?  If you don’t take care of your natural hair maintaining a weave may not be for you, because you still have to take care of your natural hair and scalp.

What’s do you gals think an appropriate age is for a weave?

P.S. I adore Keke Palmer and love her hair!  I don’t know her but from older photos it looks like she took really good care of her natural hair and she can afford to maintain her own weaves; she’s of weave-wearing age in my book (but she’s an adult now so it doesn’t really count lol)

Noticing a few strands of hair in the sink or on a hair brush is normal. Sometimes however, a woman may find her hair coming out in clumps or notice her hair thinning. She may even have completely bald patches on her scalp. For many women this can be a cause of anxiety, embarrassment or even fear.

What Causes Hair Loss?

There are several reasons a woman’s hair may be thinning. Chemicals in hair products, hormonal imbalances caused by pregnancy or menopause, exposure to radiation, a side effect of cancer fighting drugs, poor diet, or simply stress.

Pattern (Photo Credit: ISHRS.org)

Determining the reason for hair loss is the first step in treating the condition. If an underlying disease is to blame, it should be the primary concern. Addressing the condition may be the answer to restoring hair growth. Many commercial hair products contain chemicals to strip hair. Over time this can cause damage and hair loss. Organic products made with natural ingredients can restore necessary oils and help to repair the follicles. Avoiding bleach or chemical hair dyes can also prevent damage that may cause hair to break, making the hair look thin and unhealthy. While synthetic hair products may not cause hair loss, they do nothing to protect and maintain the health of the hair and should be avoided.

Treating Hair Loss Through Diet

Eating an improved diet may help to curb hair loss. Eliminating sugar laden junk foods, alcohol, and highly processed foods in favor of organic fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet will improve overall health including the hair. A diet deficient in some vitamins and minerals could also be the culprit. An iron deficiency may cause anemia which in turn could cause hair loss. Eating iron rich foods such as red meat, eggs, leafy greens, beans, and broccoli along with vitamin C rich foods can help the body absorb the iron.

B12 in Clams (Photo Credit: Wikipedia.org)

Vitamin B12 has also been shown to be important for hair growth. B12 is only found naturally in animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs. B12 is often artificially added to some cereals or can be taken as a supplement.

Herbal Treatments

Herbal teas have many health benefits and may help in preventing hair loss or simulate regrowth. Some studies have shown green tea may help to regulate hormones in the bloodstream preventing hair loss caused by hormone imbalance. Rosemary tea also helps to improve circulation and could help to stimulate follicles to grow. Other herbs that assist in regulating hormones are wild yam, chaste tree berry and dong quai. Taken together they may help to remedy hair loss caused by hormone imbalance.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are standard ingredients in most bath and body products such as bath oils, lotions, some types of soap, and are also used for aromatherapy. Create an oil blend consisting of a few drops of essential oils from thyme, cedarwood and lavender mixed with grapeseed oil. Massage this mixture into the scalp, making sure to pay special attention to the thinning or bald areas for several minutes each night. Over time the hair should show marked improvement in volume, thickness and shine. In today’s society a full head of luxurious locks is synonymous with health, youth and virility. Hair thinning and loss can be very traumatic and emotionally impactful for women. While most natural remedies are safe and easy, if a woman is experiencing a dramatic loss of hair there may be an underlying condition that should be addressed with a hair transplant physician. More often though the cause of hair loss is temporary and may be treated in a natural and homeopathic way.

Bella Dream Hair Brazilian Wave

Bella Dream Hair Brazilian Wave

Upside-Down Twist

High loose bun

I feel like it’s taken me years to get a fail-proof routine for wearing wavy textured weaves, also known s Wet n Wavy.  Outside of the basic shampoo and conditioning I’ve found several products that makes the upkeep of my waves easy peasy.

Between weekly washes, I alternate using 2 different “dry” shampoos.  If I use a heavy crème product I do a water rinse followed by No Rinse shampoo.  The liquid formula is great for getting the hair clean but I wear a lot of hair and I’d have to use entirely too much product to get this hair as I need it.  Might I add that I start off with dry hair, so I don’t want to go through bottles of No Rinse.

My Holy Grail “dry” shampoo for waves is TRESemmé Fresh Start Waterless Moisturizing Foam Shampoo.  I can start with dry hair and I’m still able to saturate my hair and create a rich foam lather without using too much product or effort.  The dry time for both products is short but depends on how well you towel dry your hair.  I suggest using a micro fiber towel.

At this point your waves should be clean and fresh.  Unless I’m using Nexxus Pro Mend (which is a cream), I stick with hair mousse. Nexxus does have a mousse, I just haven’t tested it yet. I hair mousse to be light and it doesn’t weigh down the hair, provides a soft hold, and works well with damp hair.  I also love that it enhances the wet look, even when the hair is completely dry.  I turn my head upside and use a small amount of mousse focusing on the roots and use a scrunching motion for the ends.  While my head is still upside down, I do a loose two-strand twist and twist all my hair in a loose bun that sits at the top of my hair using a loose hair tie.  But all hair mousses are not created equally.  I found Dove Body & Lift Volumizing Mousse to be the most consistent and neutral one of the bunch.  Dove Style + Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Mousse Cream feels heavy and a little too moisturizing.  It really does feel like a cross between a cream and a mousse.  I think it would work better on curls than waves.  VO5 Perfect Hold is the least expensive, and though it works great you can’t tousle the hair as much when it dries because it turns white.   The next step is optional but unless you’re sleeping on silk cover your hair with silk or satin to help eliminate frizz.

When you wake in the morning simple untwist your hair, tousle a bit, and you’re good to go.  To avoid tangling untwist with your head tilted down.

This wash week was a little different than my normal routine.  I started using products from the Beautiful Textures Collection, normally I have a different array of products that I wouldn’t using on a weave as I would my natural hair, but I decided to give it a try. So far I really like the products and didn’t find them to be too heavy on the Bella Dream Hair Brazilian Natural Wave I have installed right now.

PrepOrganic Root Stimulator Dry Shampoo, focusing on the scalp using hot to the touch water to remove any excess build-up of dirt or gunk.

ShampooBeautiful Textures Moisturizing Shampoo (2x’s)

ConditionerBeautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner, used while the hair was soaking wet, only concentrating on the ends, then removed the excess water with by gently squeezing the hair.  How trippy is it that they created a deep conditioner that can be used as a leave-in? Love it!

Finisher/ Styling:  Beautiful Textures Shine & Silken Growth Oil, which is meant for hair or scalp but I used a few drops in the palm of my hands and concentrated on just the ends, since I was unsure if it would be too heavy.

My hair was super light and well hydrated once dry and the smell is wonderful and light as well; not heavy or overwhelming at all.  I’m going to be hooked on these products lol.

This is a continuation from the tidbit I shared about the Beautiful Textures Hair Care Line I wrote this summer.  Well the complete line is in!  Normally I would hold off on trying products geared towards natural hair until (of course) I’m wearing my natural hair, but I’m going to start using these on my latest install.  The price point makes them an affordable so I don’t feel bad for using them on my weave.  The review should be up in a couple weeks :)
