10 Office Pet Office Peeves That Bother Everyone

The office is not a good place to let out your anger.

Anger isn’t tolerated in any office so when things annoy us, we repress our frustrations meaning that even the littlest things will begin to annoy us as time progresses.

Some office pet peeves are more commonly despised than others. Read about these ten common pet peeves that are bound to frustrate any worker.

Not being listened to

For a workplace to run smoothly, it’s important for every employee to work together and listen to each other.

When others don’t listen to what you have to say in the workplace you can feel that you’re not making any progression.

UK employees in particular hate not being listened to, with a survey by Printerland.co.uk revealing that people not listening is the ultimate pet peeve for British workers.

Requesting things from your boss

Speaking to your boss can be uncomfortable at the best of times, but when you’re asking for something from them then it can feel very daunting.

In the same survey by Printerland.co.uk, it was revealed that a third of British workers were scared about asking their boss for sick days, with a fifth of employees feeling uncomfortable to even ask to use their holiday allowance.

Even if you don’t feel uncomfortable requesting things from your boss, make yourself aware of what you’re perfectly within your rights to ask for and don’t feel too frightened to speak up.

Foul stenches

If spending the majority of your week within the confines of an office isn’t frustrating enough, then when the aroma of your working environment is overpowered with a foul stench it can be absolutely brutal.

Whether it’s flatulence or poor body odour, both can irk your colleagues. If you’re finding a co-worker’s stench unbearable, pull them aside and have a quick word about the issue. This conversation can be very uncomfortable for both parties so try and be considerate of the offender’s feelings.

Extra tidying up

As part of a workforce, you need to pull you weight… even if it’s non-work related.

If you leave your dirty dishes and cutlery for others to clean up, not only is it unhygienic but you’re also highlighting to everyone that you think your time is more valuable than theirs.

Clean up after yourself regularly to ensure that you don’t get on a colleague’s bad side.

Email pile ups

In a similar vein to not being listened to, having an email ignored can be extremely frustrating.

On a lot of occasions, it’s not the case that email has been ignored, but just forgotten due to the receiver having a huge email pile up.

If you’re guilty of failing to respond to emails in a respectable amount of time then you have to take time out to go through your them. If you’re missing important or urgent emails, then you could be slowing down work for others and missing important deadlines yourself.

Overdrawn meetings

Long overdrawn meetings can completely kill your productivity, especially if you’re only involved in them for a limited time.

If you have concerns about continuous, pointless meetings taking its toll on your workflow, then speak openly about how the meetings can be condensed to ensure that your workforce can remain productive.

Lack of connectivity

Nowadays, most businesses require internet access for their business to operate smoothly.

Without connection to your computers, Wi-Fi printers or work phones, your role could feel redundant at times. To ensure that your business isn’t stuck by a lack of connectivity on a regular basis, sign up with a recommended network provider so your business has the platform to flourish.

Filthy desks

Employees love to personalise their work stations to make it a mini home away from home, but some employees don’t treat their desk with the love and care others do.

Your desk is part of the office décor and you don’t have to be sat there to be annoyed about a messy desk, as it gives the whole office an untidy feel about it.

A filthy desk can leave colleagues and management questioning your professionalism as the way you treat your work space reflects you.

Office jargon

Office speak or as it’s also known ‘Office jargon’ is quite possibly the worst way to communicate with your employees or colleagues.

Not only are these buzzwords misleading and ineffective, but they do not make you sound as clever as you think!

According to job search website CV-Library, their survey revealed that UK employees despised the phrase ‘Let’s touch base’ the most, followed closely by ‘Thinking outside the box’ and ‘How long is a piece of string’.

Waste of resources

Office resources are used by everyone and when you’re working with a limited supply, it can drive you crazy when others are wasteful with them.

If your office has either a wireless printer or a portable printer, the same thing always happens…the demand for them is huge.

Printer paper is arguably wasted more than any other resource, so by proof reading any document you prepare to print, you’ll be doing your bit to ensure that your company isn’t unnecessarily forking out on office supplies.

These pet peeves may seem miniscule, but the more frequently they occur the more they grind on your colleagues. To keep a positive harmony within the office, respect the wishes of others and conduct yourself properly professionally in the workplace.
