Five Steps To Get Your Licenses Reinstated!

There’s a variety of reasons why the California DMV or judges suspend driver’s licenses. Whatever the cause, once the time frame of your suspension is finished you will need to apply for a license reinstatement. In most cases, a california drivers license suspension lawyer will be helpful in speeding up the reinstatement process.

All Traffic Ticket Fines and Court Fees Must Be Paid

The first step for reinstatement is to make sure all outstanding traffic tickets have been paid. Be sure that you obtain an FTP/FTA abstract. This document certifies you have paid all the court-required fines and penalties.

Wait Until the Suspension Period Is Over

The California DMV won’t accept your application for reinstatement until the time frame specified for your suspension has been completed. The filing date on your application should be after the date that your suspension time was finished.

Serve Your Sentence

If the punishment associated with your suspension includes jail time you must carry out the full sentence before applying for a reinstatement. If you were approved for an alternative sentencing, such as a work furlough, you will need to show that your obligation has been fulfilled.

Complete Traffic School

Some traffic offenses require attendance at a traffic school or taking a driving course. Once this has been completed, you will receive a course-completion document that must be provided with your reinstatement application.

Obtain Vehicle Insurance

The DMV won’t reinstate a license unless you first demonstrate you have the proper vehicle insurance. Your policy must be active, and if your license was suspended due to a DUI or collision, you will also need an SR-22 form to certify high-risk coverage. You can ask your insurance company for an SR-22, but if they won’t supply it, a $35,000 cash deposit with the DMV or surety bond can take its place.

Avoid Complications

When it’s time to apply for the reinstatement of your driver’s license, enlisting the assistance of a traffic ticket attorney can help sort out the more complicated issues. This can be an important step in ensuring that you don’t lose time getting your driving privileges restored.
