How Much Does Home Care Cost for Seniors?

With approximately 87% of seniors wanting to age in place, the topic of home care cost has become a popular one. Family members who research home care options for their loved one may easily become overwhelmed by the number of options. As a result of all of those options, family members will also notice various home care costs. Is home care an affordable choice for you?

The Cost of Home Care

The cost of home care is based on a number of factors, such as level of care required and the location. It’s a good idea to create a list of services needed and be realistic about how often care should take place. Some individuals need care around the clock whereas others may only need it a few days per week. The cost also depends on if personal care will be provided (e.g. bathing, dressing, etc.) or just completion of household tasks.

Homemaker/Companion Services

Those who need assistance with laundry, meal preparation, grocery shopping, and more can expect to pay at least $21.00/hour or $131 per day. This averages out to be approximately $3,990/month or $48,000/year.

Home Health Aide/Hands-On Care

Individuals who require assistance with bathing, toileting, and other activities of daily living can expect to pay at least $22.00/hour or $135 per day. The monthly cost of a home health aide is approximately $4,100/month and equates to almost $50,000/year.

Home Care Is An Affordable Elder Care Option

While those costs may alarm you, home care is still considered a much more affordable option than nursing home care. A nursing facility can provide personal care, room and board, medication management and more. However, it is approximately $100 more per day than companion care and $132 more per day than hands-on care. This averages out to be approximately $85,000 – $98,000 per year.

Understand that there are scenarios where residing in a nursing home is a better option. Always discuss elder care options with a provider first to determine what makes the most sense. Caring People have a page dedicated to explain homecare in deepth.

It’s also possible that the home care services you require are less or more than the prices mentioned above. The cost of home care greatly depends on your personalized needs.

People Prefer To Age At Home

Without question, remaining at home is a much more affordable and appealing option. Not only does it reduce hospital stays and doctors visits, but it also promotes healthier habits. Most people are simply more comfortable at home. The familiar surroundings leads to fewer accidents and injuries, especially with a caregiver to assist with the more challenging tasks.

Aging in place also promotes social engagement, autonomy, security, and daily movement. It gives a boost of confidence and optimism to an aging senior.

Make A Home Senior Friendly

In terms of safety, seniors can make adjustments to their home to ensure it’s senior friendly. The following changes can be made:

  • Add grab bars to the shower
  • Install an elevated toilet
  • Ensure the home is well-lit (nightlight’s are helpful)
  • Ensure cords are out of the way
  • Add no-step entries (e.g. ramps)
