How to Be There for a Loved One Who’s Battling Addiction

Addiction is not something that a person can overcome alone. They need love, support, and guidance. Here’s how you can help someone who’s battling addiction.

According to research, there are over 20 million Americans who are currently battling addictions. And while this number is expected to rise as time passes, no one ever really thinks about the steps they must take if their loved one is battling addiction.

While this may be a tough pill to swallow for most, we must remember that overcoming addiction is not something that is usually done alone. Now more than ever, your friend or loved one is going to need your love, support, and guidance.

But how are you to support a loved one who’s battling addiction? How do you encourage them to make better decisions and go to rehab? We take a look at what you need to know.

Offer Your Help

One of the best things you can do to help someone battling addiction is to offer your assistance. While it might seem like much now, addicts often face their battles in silence because they’re too embarrassed to discuss their weaknesses out loud.

Without being too assertive, offer a listening ear and give advice when needed. Think of different ways you can aide in getting them help.

Also, make it a team effort. Make it clear that you care and are only trying to help them get better.

Make Yourself Available

It’s no secret that people battling addiction tend to isolate themselves. Because they’re usually overwhelmed with shame, guilt, and humiliation, they’ll often feel alone in the process of recovery.

This is why it’s so important to make yourself available to them. Mark them on your schedule. Make them your priority.

Even if your loved one denies the invitation the first couple of times, they’ll at least know there’s someone to turn to when they want to talk and/or need the help.

Rehabilitation Center

Finding the perfect rehabilitation center can be one of the most difficult processes. Often, those battling addiction automatically associate these rehab centers with trauma and pain. So, they may resent any help.

The good news is, centers like Inspire Malibu can create programs that cater to your loved one. They offer drug, alcohol, and detox programs that are perfect for those who are trying to find a path to recovery.

They use evidence-based treatment, which means they’re able to track the brain activity that’s associated with addiction. Thus, creating a personalized program for your loved one.
