Senior Living Communities: Do You Retain Your Rights to Privacy?

As we get older, it gets harder to do our own home and yard maintenance. We also have less money to hire these jobs done. The house might seem too large for empty nesters and the expense of living there can become unmanageable. There is also all the stuff we have accumulated over many years of marriage and living in the same house.

Our children may have told us they will not want this stuff passed down to them. There may not be any children to pass things down to. One answer to these dilemmas is to have a few really good yard or estate sales and get rid of a lot of belongings we no longer need. After that, donate any unwanted items that are left. Then it may be time to move to a senior living community where someone else does the hard work of home and yard maintenance.

But, How Do We Find Senior Living Close To Family?

Independent Senior Living Near Me is a search that many older couples are forced to take part in. Older couples living near Reynoldsburg, OH can start by checking out a community such as Wesley Ridge Retirement Community. Many senior living communities have representatives to meet with couples looking for senior living communities and have tours available.

A couple’s choices of senior living communities will be limited by their health, their retirement income or savings, and other factors. It is important to match one’s new home to things that are important to a couple such as social interaction opportunities, sports and exercise facilities, housekeeping assistance, medical assistance, privacy, size of home space, and more. Will 24-hour emergency services be available? Will the couple retain their independence and be able to travel and retain a vehicle?

Check Out The Facility First

It is too late to make changes in services or the size of the apartment once you are moved in. The time to be sure of what any senior living community offers and at what price is before you move in and sign contracts.

  • Ask to see floor plans of the available units with room sizes listed.
  • Ask for a list of all amenities and services available and at what prices.
  • Make sure you are given a full list of all costs and charges for living in this community. What is included in your basic rent charge and what will cost extra. Make it clear that you do not want any surprise charges or hidden costs.
  • Ask for a written copy of all the rules for the community and the limitations for living there. If you have a beloved pet–are pets allowed? Can you decorate your unit the way you want?
  • What happens if one or both parts of a couple become ill or incapacitated, or if one dies?

Do You Still Retain a Right To Privacy?

Make sure to check out the rules and rights you have to independence and privacy in the senior living community. By law, seniors are entitled to a certain amount of privacy. But there must be a good balance between having privacy and feeling isolated and left out. Ask about what measures the people overseeing the senior living community have in place to monitor the health and wellbeing of residents while giving them the right amount of privacy.

The type of senior living facility will make a difference in how much privacy a person can expect. Some types of senior housing include assisted living, independent living communities, nursing homes, and senior group homes.
