If you’re a woman, you know how important it is to be alert when you’re alone, especially when you’re in unfamiliar locations. Here are 5 women safety tips that you should know for basic self-defense.

In 2016, there were an estimated 1,248,185 violent crimes. With such alarming statistics, it’s hard not to be concerned about women safety. As such, there are basic self-defense tips every woman should know about.

Some of the dangers women face daily include robberies, sexual assault, and rape. Others include threats of violence, workplace attacks, and physical harm from intimate partners. In other instances, women are at the mercy of home invaders.

Unfortunately, no one – including men – can be a hundred percent safe. Yet, there are preventive and protective steps you can take. Keep reading to learn basic self-defense tips for women safety.

Basic Self-Defense Tips for Women Safety

Last year, 34 percent of surveyed Americans said they were stressed about their personal safety. This was a five percent increase from the previous year. Thus, you need to prepare yourself in case of danger.

Here are five basic safety tips for women:

1. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

This first point is something that endangers many women. They realize too late that an attacker is behind them waiting to pounce. As such, you should concentrate and be aware of your surroundings throughout.

Don’t listen to music or play with your phone as you walk. One distracted moment is all it takes to get you. Also, when you go to a parking lot, check inside and under your car before entering.

When going home or to your hotel, look around before opening the door. The person lingering could be planning to attack you.

Remember the effective rule of not taking any food or items from strangers. They could be laced with drugs. The same goes for when you are at a club taking a drink. Watch your drink or cover it to prevent someone from drugging you.

2. Have Other People With You in Public

Another great rule is about safety in numbers. It’s fallible but it works most of the time. You’ll have people watching your back as you do the same for them. It can also dissuade a single attacker from getting someone from your group.

If it’s dark, ask someone to accompany you to your car. When a stranger approaches you, make sure your group can see you.

Though it’s become a trend, try not to broadcast your location when in public or through social media. A predator may be watching your moves waiting for an opportunity to attack.

3. Carry Pepper Spray at all Times

If preventive steps don’t work, then it’s time for a protective approach. A great way to ward off an attacker is by using pepper spray. The Pepper Shot Brand is a very potent spray with a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) of 2 million. That means it’s very hot.

You can get concealable types such as a lipstick or keychain pepper spray. You can use it legally in all fifty states to thwart an attacker.

4. Take Martial Arts Lessons

Martial arts lessons are another great way to stay safe. They teach you how to disarm or fight off an assailant. You can temporarily hurt them enough to give you a chance to escape.

It could also be possible to knock out your attacker using martial arts techniques. However, it’s better to give yourself an opening to escape and call the police.

Take martial arts classes alongside weight training exercises. Lifting weights will give you more energy and strength to fend off a strong attacker.

5. Practice Home and Car Safety Measures

Always lock your home or hotel room door and don’t open it to strangers. Also, stop the practice of leaving your home key under the welcome mat. Criminals know about it and it will put you at risk.

Lock your car doors at all times and close the windows when you exit the car. Don’t give or offer a ride to strangers. It is very risky.
